Halloween Story Contest for area 3rd, 6th, and 8th Graders

The Richland Academy of the Arts Halloween Short Story contest is a free contest and open to all 3rd , 6th and 8th graders who attend school in Richland County Ohio including: public, private, and/or home school. Prizes will be awarded to the top three stories from each grade. The winner’s short stories will also be published in Richland Source and asked to read their story at The Richland Academy Halloween Party & Monster Mash Bash on October 21.

The Halloween Short Story Telling is designed to give participating students the opportunity to express and share their creative side with the community. Stories may be scary, humorous, or anything in-between.

The Halloween Short Story Telling is designed to give participating students the opportunity to express their creative side and share with the community their story. By creating this contest, we hope to build a new interest in storytelling, creative writing, and self-expressionism, and exploration.  This contest is open to all 3rd, 6th, and 8th graders that attend school in Richland County, including public, private, charter and/or home based.

  • Third graders are encouraged to write a short, 300 word or less, Halloween story (examples: my pet monster/ brother, trick or treat, the witch next door, the monster under the stairs)
  • Sixth graders are asked to write a 400 word or less short story that includes a Richland County local landmark or legend. (Examples: Hidden Hollow, The Block House, Malabar Farm, Gatton Rocks, UFO sighting, Loch Ness sighting at Charles Mill Lake)
  • Eighth graders are implored to create their own legend or myth regarding a location or person/animal (real or imaginative) in Richland County

Stories may be scary or humorous, and anything in-between.

Judging will be based as follows. Creativity 40%, Originality 20%,

Spelling 20%, Able to follow directions 20%= total 100%.

The short story should be on a separate page or pages and in the right hand corner, only include your

 Personal # and grade

 If it is typed please use Times New Roman for your short story and twelve point black font.
