Your Creativity Benefits Us All

Richland Academy of the Arts exists to provide every member of our community the opportunity to experience a life enriched by the arts.

Here are just a few reasons why having access to the arts is critical to the health of our community.

1. The future depends on it.

Study after study has shown that children, through exposure to the arts, learn invaluable life skills, gain confidence, discover who they are, and have the opportunity to explore who they want to be. We understand that the children who engage with our programs in music, dance, visual arts, martial arts, and other arts opportunities are the leaders of tomorrow.

2. We’re building a community.

Connections mean everything. Whether you’re taking private lessons or group classes, the connections you make with others through creative pathways are amazingly beneficial for members of our community of all ages.

3. A good in and of itself.

Beauty matters. Creativity is world-changing. Engaging with the arts through lessons, classes, and in partnership with a caring expert in a particular discipline opens new worlds, builds novel bridges, and improves our community as a whole in ways we can’t even quantify.

4. Discover, explore, and experience true transformation.

At Richland Academy of the Arts, we open up doors to a variety of different artistic fields, giving learners of all ages the unique chance to explore which disciplines speak to them in a supportive, warm community and safe environment.

And that’s truly just the beginning… Richland Academy of the Arts remains committed to offering our community continual opportunities to engage the arts in new ways and experience the wide range of benefits on both a personal and community level.

The Barkdull Scholarship is intended to make private lessons available to students who may not otherwise be able to take lessons.

The Barkdull Family has been a fixture in Shelby, Ohio for several generations, having founded Barkdull Funeral Home in 1895. A lifelong Shelby resident, Dick Barkdull passed away in 2009. He loved music, a passion that carries on through his children. He was his children’s and grandchildren’s biggest fan and watched their music performances with enormous pride. In memory of this love, passion, and pride, his family has established the Dick Barkdull Memorial Scholarship at Richland Academy.

The Dr. Tom Croghan Memorial Music Scholarship is a Contemporary music scholarship to a student interested in private lessons.

Dr. Croghan may have been born in Dayton, but he made his home in Mansfield. He was born October 7, 1939, and died December, 20, 2009. He was a practicing physician and an excellent jazz musician. It is difficult to express how much he did for Richland Academy. In addition to being the founding President, he made numerous donations and was the driving force behind countless performances. He was a firm believer in the wonder and importance of jazz music and loved to encourage students. He touched many young proteges who have gone on to success in jazz and contemporary music.

The J. Frederick Wolf Memorial Vocal Scholarship is a Vocal music scholarship to a student interested in participating in private lessons.

Frederick Wolf was a life-long Mansfield area resident. He was born April 22, 1914, and died March 11, 2005. He founded the Mansfield Choral Society in 1933, and was the Director of the volunteer community singing group for 56 years. He remained as Director Emeritus after stepping down and continued to direct the song “Let There Be Peace on Earth” at the end of each concert. His colleagues remembered him as an admirable musician with a great love for choral music. As a director, he expected and got the best out of each section of the group. The Mansfield Choral Society established an award in his memory.
